Blog #5: Integrating Blogs in the Curriculum

Author: Karen Wahl from Mercer County Community College,

Topic: I would also be interested in a blog on How Blogs could be useful in Distance Learning (online courses). Do blogs serve the same purpose as an online discussion board? Do they have other advantages? I'm not quite clear.

I, too, am interested in the topic. My understanding is that blogs are more convenient than discussion boards (which I use quite a bit) because it is easier to add pictures, links, documents, etc. into the blogs.

Since I haven't used blogs much, my question is whether blog topics can be threaded like discussion board postings are.

This is, I think, the crux of the issue for me. How are blogs different from (better than, not quite as good as) other online interaction tools - threaded discussions, for example - in terms of their pedagogical application? What do they do well in terms of engaging learners? What are some of the better ideas for their use for instruction? This is what will move the tool from just another new "thing" to something really useful for teaching and learning.

Kathryn - thank you for volunteering to moderate. Would you like help creating the blog? You can post the information for people to join here as a comment post. Email me if you have questions.

Name: Karen Wahl
Title: Technical Assistant
Email address: wahlk@mccc.edu
Role: Author

Since I was designated the author, I started to create the blog for this topic (I hope I'm doing this right). It can be found at http://integrating-blogs.blogspot.com/ . There is no special login procedure/password for this blog. (How would we do a password?)

Kathryn, thanks for volunteering to moderate. Could you take a look and give any suggestions or create any posts? That goes for anyone else willing to join this blog. Thanks!

Kathryn,

What you will want to do is ask people for their email address - or let me know who you need and you can send them an invitation to join. You do that from the control panel in Blogger. Let me know if you have questions.

You can add me as a test - star@tltgroup.org

Lisa,

I saw the response for Kathryn but I have a question. In this post would you ask for people to give their email address, then send an invitation for the Integrating Blogs - blog using the Control Panel in Blogger? Then they would have access to the blog by invitation only. Could anyone just use the URL to enter the Blog?

Should I let Kathryn do this or give it a try with you or her email?
